Getting to Moyogalpa and Ometepe

Reach San Jorge ferry port near Rivas, then cross the lake to Moyogalpa in about 60–70 minutes. From Managua Airport, a direct car keeps the road journey simple; buses from the city, Granada and San Juan del Sur connect through Rivas. The boat lands beside town, with a further island journey for Balgüe, Santa Cruz or Mérida.

The three mainland routes

All three routes finish at San Jorge ferry port. Buses connect through Rivas, while a direct car takes you to the port. The road times below are for the direct drive; allow extra for bus stops, connections, port formalities and the lake crossing.

Mainland routes to San Jorge
RoutePublic transportDirect road time
Managua AirportSeparate ride to Mercado Roberto Huembes → bus to Rivas → taxi to San Jorge.About 2½ hours by car
GranadaTerminal de Maxi Palí → bus to Rivas, about 2 hours → taxi to San Jorge.About 1½ hours by car
San Juan del SurCentral Market bus station → Rivas → taxi to San Jorge.Around 40 minutes by car

A direct car removes the bus-terminal changes when arriving with children or bulky luggage. A morning bus journey leaves more room for the connections on a tighter budget. At the port, allow time for ferry tickets and boarding.

From Managua Airport or the city

For the direct route, arrange pickup to Puerto de San Jorge, with the flight number, passenger count and luggage included in the request. The drive takes about two and a half hours before the port stop and boat. Give yourself time to collect bags and clear the airport before setting the pickup time.

For public transport, first travel from the airport to Mercado Roberto Huembes, where Rivas-bound buses leave. The Managua–Rivas bus stage takes roughly two to three hours. Some San Juan del Sur- or Peñas Blancas-bound services also drop passengers in Rivas: tell the conductor where you need to get off before boarding.

A few buses continue to San Jorge, but most journeys involve a taxi from Rivas. An expreso makes fewer stops than a local bus. Add the airport-to-terminal ride, final port connection and crossing to the bus time; start early for a same-day arrival on Ometepe.

From Granada: local bus or shared shuttle

The public route is Granada → Rivas → San Jorge. Rivas buses leave from Terminal de Maxi Palí, with about two hours for that bus leg. Budget C$50–80 (about US$1.40–2.20) per passenger for Granada–Rivas, based on the September 2026 fare; luggage can cost extra. From Rivas, take a taxi to the ferry port.

A shared road transfer can avoid the Rivas change, while a direct car gives more freedom over departure time. Establish the pickup point, luggage allowance and exact drop-off at San Jorge when arranging either. The ferry ticket is a separate purchase at the port.

The bus suits an early departure and a smaller budget. With a road transfer, leave time between the drop-off and your sailing for the passenger ticket window and boarding.

The scheduled Granada shuttle picks up at hotels at 12:30 and reaches San Jorge around 15:00. Shared pickups can add waiting, so leave room before the boat rather than buying a tight connection.

From San Juan del Sur

For the public route, go to San Juan del Sur’s Central Market bus station for a Rivas-bound bus, then take a taxi to San Jorge. The direct road journey by car takes roughly 40 minutes, with port formalities and the crossing afterwards.

For a direct road pickup, specify San Jorge ferry port as the destination. A drop-off in Rivas, including at its Puma roundabout, still leaves the taxi connection. A morning bus departure gives you room for that change; a car taken straight to the port removes it.

From Costa Rica via Peñas Blancas

Peñas Blancas → Rivas → San Jorge → Moyogalpa is the route from Costa Rica. Complete Costa Rican exit and Nicaraguan entry formalities before joining the Rivas-bound bus on the Nicaraguan side. From Rivas, a taxi takes about 20 minutes to San Jorge; the boat then takes around 60–70 minutes on the lake.

The Costa Rican bus leg is about six hours from San José or one hour 45 minutes from Liberia to Peñas Blancas. The Rivas–border bus corridor takes roughly 45–60 minutes on the road. Those are separate legs: border queues, bus connections and ferry waiting add time, so a morning start gives this journey room.

Keep your passport and onward-trip and accommodation details accessible. Entry conditions depend on nationality and immigration status; border processing has no fixed duration. After a slow crossing, a Rivas night avoids making the final ferry the day’s only option.

The Rivas change and the island arrival

At Rivas, say Puerto de San Jorge, para el ferry a Moyogalpa. Agree whether the fare covers the whole car or each passenger, including bags. Shared taxis may wait to fill; a private ride should establish whether anyone else will be collected along the way.

At San Jorge, buy a sailing to Moyogalpa. San José del Sur is a separate Ometepe port farther along the island road. Budget C$50 (about US$1.40) per person for a one-way ferry ticket or C$35 (about US$1) for a passenger lancha, plus the separate passenger port charge. Allow time for tickets and boarding after the taxi drops you off.

After the boat, Hotel Ometepetl is 70 varas east of the port, and Hospedaje Soma is about a 15-minute walk away. Tuk-tuks offer an alternative with luggage; agree the total for your party before leaving.

Balgüe, Santa Cruz and Mérida require another island bus or transfer. Give an arranged driver the actual arrival port and sailing time. For a first night in town, leave your bags and enjoy Moyogalpa’s waterfront and places to eat.

The port gate and the boarding area

A ride to “San Jorge” can end at the port gate. Establish whether your drop-off is outside or inside, especially with heavy bags. Budget C$20 (about US$0.50) per vehicle for entry if the car continues inside the gate; that vehicle charge is separate from passenger port charges and ferry tickets.

Give the driver your pickup address, passenger count and luggage needs when arranging the road journey. At San Jorge, keep cash and passport details handy for passenger check-in and the boat. Finish the road leg with enough time for those port stops.

Late flights, Sundays and the first island night

A late-afternoon flight is a poor fit for a same-day island arrival. The airport drive alone is about two and a half hours, before port waiting and a crossing of more than an hour. The timetable’s final Moyogalpa-bound sailing is 5:45 p.m., with cancellations possible. A mainland night is the more workable plan when airport release and the drive leave only the final sailing.

Public transport has fewer options on Sundays, especially once you are on Ometepe. Start the mainland bus journey in the morning. For a late arrival followed by Balgüe or Mérida, arrange the island leg in advance or take a first night in Moyogalpa and continue in daylight. An eastern island base brings you closer to Maderas and the forest after that first night.

Keep documents, cash and electronics in a small bag with you; larger bags can be stored separately on public buses. Include oversized bags and any child-seat needs in the pickup request so the vehicle has space for your party.

A mainland night in Rivas

Sleeping in Rivas takes the ferry out of an early flight morning. Gran Hotel Victoria puts a private bathroom and breakfast beside the central park. Hostel Julieta offers a smaller room bill with a shared bathroom. Both are mainland town stays; Managua Airport still needs the onward road drive and airport check-in time. For the earliest departures, an airport-area night is more convenient.

Back to the mainland

The return starts with the journey from your room to the correct island port, then tickets, boarding, the 60–70-minute crossing and the mainland ride. Work back from the time you need to reach your final destination, leaving room between each stage.

Aim to be at the island port about 45 minutes before sailing. Leave a gap between the boat’s arrival at San Jorge and any onward road departure: those services have separate tickets, and a ferry delay can mean finding a later ride. An earlier return ferry gives you more room for the road connection.

For an early flight from Managua, stay on the mainland the previous night.
