Arrival: ferry, room and Moyogalpa
The San Jorge–Moyogalpa crossing takes roughly 60–70 minutes on the water, plus ticketing and boarding. Drop your bags after landing, then follow the main street inland to the park and Santa Ana church. Shops and restaurants make this an easy afternoon on foot; the town walk gives it a shape.
Hotel Ometepetl suits a short walk from the boat. Soma adds garden space and a pool on the quieter edge of town. Both work for keeping the same room through the western route. A trip centred on Maderas starts better with the onward ride to Balgüe or Mérida while there is daylight.

Day 1: Charco Verde and Punta Jesús María
Lagoon and lookout: 1–1.5 hours walking · afternoon shore stop: 1–2 hours
Charco Verde is the farther stop from town, so the day works south to north. The paths follow the green lagoon through woodland; Mirador del Diablo adds the higher view, while the butterfly and bird garden extends the visit without a long climb. The lagoon circuit is enough for a relaxed morning.

Lunch comes before Punta Jesús María. Here the shore opens out into Lake Nicaragua, with the volcanoes behind and Mombacho across the water. Lake level changes how far the sand spit reaches. An hour beside the water is a better plan than a fixed-length walk out onto the sand.
A car with waiting or agreed collection joins Charco Verde’s entrance, Punta’s shore access and your Moyogalpa room. For a slower outing, spend the day at one stop and use the western-shore transport options to arrange the return.
Day 1 budget: About US$7 per person for the two entrances; road transport and meals are extra.
Day 2: Concepción
8–10 hours return on foot · steep upper slopes · an evening back in Moyogalpa
Concepción is the hard day: farmland, dry forest, then loose red scoria above the trees. Cloud decides how much of the lake appears, but the long descent is part of the day in any weather. Regular walkers who enjoy steep ground have a clear reason to come; an easy-path holiday calls for a different middle day.
No summit? Swap in El Ceibo’s archaeology and currency museums at Sacramento, followed by lunch and an afternoon in town.
The group trek covers the guide and entry, with your own trail ride and supplies. A private trek adds the trail transfer. Dinner and the same room after the descent are the evening plan; a ferry belongs the following morning. The Concepción hike has the terrain and preparation details.

Day 3: Ojo de Agua and Santo Domingo
2–3 hours at the pools · lakeside lunch · return to Moyogalpa
Spring-fed pools under the trees are a good answer to yesterday’s climb. Ojo de Agua has showers, changing rooms and a restaurant, so a towel and dry clothes cover the essentials. Santo Domingo follows for lunch beside the lake and a beach walk. Wind can roughen the open shore; the pool morning supplies the swim.

A private driver joins the two stops and the return to your room. Budget about C$370 (about US$10) for foreign admission at Ojo de Agua, including a food-and-drink credit; spending above that credit costs extra. The driver day covers the road journey, with pool entry and meals separate.

Shorter stays
Two nights: one full day
Charco Verde and Punta Jesús María give the middle day woodland, water and time to stop for lunch. Arrive, sleep in Moyogalpa, take that western outing, then leave after the second night. Hikers coming for one mountain can replace it with Concepción, with a room waiting after the descent.
One night: town and a nearby shore
An early arrival leaves time for Punta Jesús María after dropping your bags; a later departure may fit Charco Verde instead. A late arrival and early boat leave dinner, breakfast and a town walk. The boat times decide which outing fits. For one night, the port side of Moyogalpa keeps the visit simple.
Balgüe and Mérida route
Four nights on the Maderas side put forest, farms and the southern shore around your days. Balgüe suits the mountain and coffee country; Mérida brings the kayak launch and waterfall approach closer. One base avoids packing between outings, though road rides still connect your room to the trail or jetty.
Ananda is a hillside stay for a trip built around Maderas. Selvista has more sleeping space for families or friends, while Caballito’s Mar puts the lake at the centre of a Mérida stay. Ananda’s final 600 metres are dirt and rock; Selvista’s parking approach needs four-wheel drive. Arrival by car makes sense for both hillside properties.

Day 1 Maderas
The mountain starts green and stays green. Roots, mud and cloud forest lead toward the crater lagoon, with a long return along the same rough ground. This is a full walking day; road travel sits outside that allowance. The group Maderas trek covers guide and entry, with food, drinks and road transport extra. A private trek adds the trail transfer.

Maderas Day 1 budget: from about US$60 per person for the group trek with guide and admission; road transport, food and drinks are extra.
Private trek with hotel transport: from about US$90 per person.
Day 2 Istián
After the climb, a paddle changes both the pace and the view. The guided Istián outing lasts 2.5 hours, starting and finishing at the Mérida jetty, with equipment included. A Mérida room keeps the morning approach short; from Balgüe, the road ride comes first. The Mérida launch is the meeting point. Lunch and time on the shore fill the afternoon.

Maderas Day 2 budget: from about US$28 per person for the guided paddle with equipment; the ride to the jetty and food are extra.
Day 3 San Ramón
Water falls over dark rock on the southern flank of Maderas. The route climbs from the Biological Station approach; upper vehicle access still leaves a rocky stretch on foot. San Ramón village, the station and the trail’s higher access are separate points, so the waterfall route matters when arranging the ride. Coffee or cacao around Balgüe makes a gentler replacement after two active days.
Maderas Day 3 budget: About US$3 per person for station-route entry; transport and food are extra, with a separate charge for optional upper vehicle access.
Keeping a Moyogalpa room? The waterfall, Istián and sunset day combines the walk, paddle and road journeys, with pickup and return in town. It fits an active traveller who wants the eastern outings in one long day; the waterfall climb still makes it a physical outing. The eight-hour alternative visits the waterfall and Ojo de Agua.
A week on Ometepe
Two nights in Moyogalpa, then three or four nights in Balgüe or Mérida give the west and east their own time. Spend the full western day at Charco Verde and Punta Jesús María, or give it to Concepción. Move east after breakfast rather than returning across the island every evening.
From Balgüe, use the Maderas day, then coffee and cacao on the lower slopes. From Mérida, give one morning to Istián and another day to San Ramón. Leave a lake afternoon between the harder outings. That makes five or six nights; a seventh buys a slower shore day or a final Moyogalpa night before the boat.
Budget and departure
Four-night budget using these provider from-prices: about US$224 per person, sharing an Ometepetl room between two (four room nights ÷ 2, the group Concepción trek, the private driver day and about US$7 for Charco Verde and Punta entries), plus about C$370 (about US$10) for Ojo de Agua. Meals, ferries, volcano trail transport and the western-shore road rides are extra.
Rooms, ferry tickets and meals outside a package sit alongside the daily outing costs. Road rides are the largest missing piece for independent days: a return car, a bus journey and a scooter day buy different amounts of freedom. The island transport options help match the ride to your route. A longer stay in one room also leaves more time for the village meal or lake afternoon between booked outings.
Departure starts before the boat: ride to the dock, ticketing and boarding, then the crossing and onward road journey. From Balgüe or Mérida, an early ferry calls for an arranged car or a final night in Moyogalpa. Sunday buses are limited. A mainland overnight puts the crossing a day before an early flight; the journey from San Jorge is the final leg to plan.
